Week 5 Notes

Swimming Notes
Swimming notes went home last week.  Swimming is part of the Physical Education program and therefore all students need to be participating.  Please complete the forms and return with money as soon as possible.

Talk Homework and WPW
I am very disappointed to see that only half the class are completing their Talk Homework and Word Problem Wednesdays.  Please take time to work through these with your child and have them ready at school on Thursday mornings.

Uniforms
It is great to see that most the class are wearing the correct uniform.  Some students are not wearing the correct footwear though - they are only to wear mainly white or black shoes, white socks and white laces.  Please see that your child is wearing the correct uniform to school everyday.

Keylinks Books
During Literacy Rotations, students read Keylinks books.  Once a book is completed they take it home to read out loud to their parents/guardians then return the books to school.  I am currently chasing up a lot of these books that have not been returned.  Please ensure these are put straight into school bags ready to be returned.

Absent Notes
I am chasing up a number of absent notes from students who have been away.  Please remember that there are a number of ways to report absences, however we must have it from a parent/guardian - not a child.  You can call the school, email, use the app or write a note. Thank you to those who are prompt with this.

Week 3 Reminders

Raffle Books
Raffle books were sent our a couple of weeks ago.  They were due back last Friday.  I am still waiting for 4 books to come in.  These books MUST be returned whether the tickets are sold or not.  Please ensure your child brings their books back tomorrow.  I will be sending home reminders today.

Choir Permission Slip
The Choir will be performing at the Centenary Fete this weekend.  Students are only able to perform if their permission slips are returned.  Please return these ASAP.

Plants for the Fete
Year 3 classes have been asked to donate potted plants for the Fete plant stall.  Please send these in as soon as you can and we will care for them at school until the Fete.  So far none have been received.

Uniforms
A reminder that correct and complete uniform should be worn every day to school.  Students have been great with the correct shirt and shorts/skirts and we are now on track with correct shoes.  However, we are falling down in the socks department (no pun intended).  Students socks are to be only white.  Please ensure your child has and wears correct uniform each day.

Another Paul Swan game... Mary's Game

This week I introduced another game to the class.  Students had to line up behind two rows of numbers from 1 -12.  Then each team took turns to roll 2 dice.  The team had to decide whether to add, subtract, times or divide the numbers on the dice - then turn over the number card for the answer.  The winner is the team who turns all their cards over.  This is what we have been collecting the bread tags for.  We have made sets of numbered bread tags so students can play in pairs at their desks.  It gets pretty competitive and so far whoever stands behind the orange card wins!!  We will have to play more to see if this theory lasts!!

Last Week of School!!

Yes! It is the last week of a very busy and tiring term.  I know I am ready for the holidays as are most the students.  So here are a few notes to finish off the term ...

Sculptures in Art
Students made some fantastic sculptures in Art this term.  I am sure they will find pride of place at home.

Inter-school
Well done to all those who competed in the Inter-school this week which was run on Monday and Wednesday.  Wattle Grove came second!!  Room 17 competitors for Monday were Elice, Armani, Lincoln, Shweta, Anya and Nyima.  On Wednesday we sent Elice and Lincoln.  Well done!

Boxes and Green Bottles
The Art room is in need of supplies.  If you have any small boxes like cereal boxes, egg cartons etc or green soft drink bottles please save them and bring them in.

Holiday Homework
Don't panic!  I have assigned students an easy holiday homework task.  They are to bring something back to school from their holidays that they can talk about.  It doesn't have to be anything big or that they bought, it could be a shell they found on a beach they visited, a shiny rock from the bush, or any other thing they would like to share from their holiday.

Finally....
Have a wonderful, safe holiday and I look forward to seeing all the students back in Term 4 fully refreshed and ready to work.

School Photos
School photos were sent home last week.  Hope they arrived home safe and you are happy with them.

Talk Homework
This weeks Talk Homework is about writing a persuasive letter.  I have asked students to ask to look at some examples of letters at home.  Their topic is about homework and they have to convince the Teacher to give them less.

Week 9 Notes

Homework
It was great to see 100% of students completed last weeks homework task - I'm sure the bribery had nothing to do with it.  I have enjoyed reading all the parent comments about the blog too and I'm glad that you all enjoy it!

Homework for the rest if this term will consist of:
- reading - at least 10 minutes every night
- spelling - every night
- Word Problem Wednesday - due Thursday for marking
- Talk Homework for writing - Tuesday night
- extra - Studyladder and Lexile Pro quizzes

Lexile Pro
So far two students have received Lexile certificates at assemblies. I told students that I wanted at least 4 of them to receive certificates at the next assembly. Good news is that we are on track for this!! There are a few who are not far off. Please encourage your child to complete their reading and quizzes at home. They must achieve a mark of 7/10 to pass the quiz. To do this they have to have read the book and understand it, complete the quiz as soon as finishing the book and have the book with them during the quiz to refer to.

Test Books
After repeated reminders I am still waiting for several Test Books to be returned to school. Please check that your child has returned theirs and if not, have them put it in their bag today. They will be going home at the end of Week 9 and need to be returned by the end of Week 10.

Absences
Room 17 currently has no unexplained absences!!  Yay!!

If your child is absent for any reason there are several ways you can report this.
1. Use the Wattle Grove Primary School app that can now be downloaded.
2. Call the school office on the day of the absence.
3. Send in a signed note, or note in their school diary, on the day they return to school.
4. If you are at the school, you can tell me in person.
5. Email me at Julia.Calvert@education.wa.edu.au

Doing one of the above saves me from having to chase these up so I appreciate your co-operation.

Well done Blue faction who won the day!!!

Rutvi got her first Lexile Certificate.  That makes 2 Room 17 students who have achieved this.  I would love to see more certificates for our room at the next assembly!

Wattle Day - 1 September 2015

We celebrated Wattle Day yesterday and made these fantastic Wattle posters - they are all so different and are looking fabulous in our classroom window.

Sunday 30 August 2015

What a hoot!!

We currently have a parliament of owls perched in our classroom.  This was a maths task where students had to follow a list of paired co-ordinates to create an unknown picture. They are looking pretty good too!

Tuesday 25 August 2015

Student Fete

Tomorrow is our Student Fete.  Students are only allowed to bring $7.00 to spend.  You have probably already heard we are making lolly bags to sell.

We have created some posters to put on our stall and then enlarged them.

Some students had to perform a one minute advertisement for a special assembly, to entice other students to come purchase our lolly bags.

We made special advertising posters to go around the school.

Our lolly bags had to be filled and weighed to ensure they were all the same.  We wore gloves for this so that we didn't pass on any germs.

These hats are for our sellers to wear during the fete.

We are looking forward to the fete, selling our lolly bags and seeing what the other classes are selling.

Books Light Up My World - Book Week

It's Book Week!!  This year's theme is 'Books Light Up My World'.  Room 17 have discussed our favorite books and why we like them.  We have then written a short book review on our coloured light bulbs and have them displayed in the classroom.  They look like party lights!!

Students have also sat their Lexile Pro test for Term 3.  It was so excited to see the results with many students improving and some even jumping to the next level!  It has also been wonderful to see so many students getting motivated and completing lots of Lexile quizzes!

Tuesday 11 August 2015

Special Homework

We have been practising for the faction carnival and it seems our ball skills need improvement.  Therefore I have assigned some special homework for students - they must learn to throw and catch a ball.  Please help your child practise this at home.

Congratulations Certificate Winners

Our latest Certificate winners from last week are...

Armani, Chelsea S, Anya and Naveed.

Italian News

Signora Harrison recently told the students about the Italian event below.  See the photo for details.

Week 3 Notes

I can not believe it is already the end of week 3!!  This term is flying by and we are so busy.

Lapathon
The Lapathon is on this afternoon.  I hope students have been busy raising money.  If students raise $10 they can choose a prize from the sponsor form, go into the draw to win an iPad Mini AND you could win a family holiday to Bali!!

I'm looking forward to getting out in the sunshine today and having some fun on the oval.

Uniform
It's great to see so many students wearing correct uniform.  This includes footwear - which should be mainly black or white, white sock, black or white laces.  Also, students should NOT be wearing jewellery or coloured hair clips and scrunchies.  Hair accessories need to be in the school colours.

Student Fete
The student fete will be on in week 6.  I'm sure your child has shared our ideas and planning with you.  On the day, students are only allowed to bring $7.00 to spend at the stalls. It will also be a dress up event so stay tuned for more information.

School App
The school now has an app that you can download to your phone to keep up to date with information.  You can also register your child's absence from school on it to save making a phone call or writing a note.

Homework
It has been disappointing to see so many students not completing their homework.  Homework includes daily reading, spelling words, times tables, Word Problem Wednesday, Talk Homework and a homework sheet. Students should also be accessing Studyladder and Lexile on the computer.

Enjoy your weekend,
Miss Calvert

Friday 24 July 2015

Week 1 Notes

Room 17 have voted for this semester's Student Councillors - Congratulations to Shreya and Gnanadeep.

This morning we had a whole school assembly.  Principal's Challenge award winners were announced.

Congratulations to Gnanadeep, Shaun, Anya, Halle and Noah who were in the Top 5 for Year 3 (they all had the same mark).

Congratulations also to Chelsea, Jamie and Anya for being in the Top 5 Most Improved.

Scholastic Bookclub flyers went home today.  There are a great way to support the school and pick up some good, cheap books.  Some of the books have Lexile ratings and would be fantastic for students to read and them complete a Lexile quiz to earn points and certificates.  Orders are due at the office by 31 July.

Tuesday 21 July 2015

Term 3 Notes

Welcome back to school!
I have been very impressed with the way students have come back to school.  They are all looking relaxed, refreshed and ready to learn!  I have heard all about your holidays and know you all enjoyed the two week break - just as I did!

Bread Tags
If you are a bread eater could you please save the tags that come on packets of bread and rolls and bring them into class.  I will be collecting these to make some maths resources and we need LOTS.  I will leave a container at the front of the classroom for students to put them in.  Thank you.

Canteen Helpers
The canteen runs on Tuesdays and Wednesdays providing lunches for students and staff who order.  They are desperate for helpers to come in and assist in making these lunches.  If you have some time available and would like to help out please contact the school office and let them know.

Important Dates
We have another busy term upon us.  Here is a list of important dates for you to remember.  There may be other things that arise during the term and I will post information here on those things.

Just a reminder that if your child is receiving a certificate at Senior Assembly I will call you to let you know.  I don't tell the students as I like it to be a surprise for them.

Homework
This week's homework is Spelling words, Word Problem Wednesday and Reading.  There is no extra sheet or Talk Homework this week.  There will be a few weeks during the term where we will be doing a Cold Write - this is where students don't get the writing prompt the day before to discuss at home.  When students do bring home their Talk Homework please take time to discuss this with them.  There are prompt questions on the sheet that you can talk through.  In Week 2 students will begin working on a Report and over these weeks there will be no talk homework.

Looking forward to another fabulous Term.
