Assembly Certificate Winners

Well done to our latest Merit Certificate Winners : Shameka, Raymond and Shreya.

Room 17 also won the School Board Uniform Award -
I am so proud of my class who are always wearing their complete school uniforms.

Harmony Day

Yesterday was Harmony Day and it was great to see so many students dressed up - even Miss Calvert had her World Map shoes on!  In Room 17, we talked about the different countries we all came from.  We labelled Miss Calvert's giant World Map with these countries.  Room 17 has 14 different countries represented!!  We also looked at some cards that showed the national dress of different countries and coloured some paper dolls and labelled them with the countries.  Check out the display on our class room windows.  Miss Randall did a fantastic job with the Harmony Day Art Installation and we went out to have a look and find our little person with all the thank you messages on it.

Maths is Fun!

Students in Room 17 are really enjoying learning Maths with the Prime books.  It is so exciting as a teacher to see students getting excited about Maths.  We often start our maths lessons with Quickulations.  This is an online mental maths activity that can also be done at home. Students are getting much better at mental computation and are now solving one digit addition problems in 4 seconds and one digit subtraction problems in 9 seconds!

They are also especially excited about the Paul Swan Maths Games they get to play, when they complete their work.  These are maths games that target different areas, are fun and the students are learning while they are playing them!  Luckily Miss Calvert has a big supply of these games.

Day and Night

This term, Room 17 have been learning about Day and Night during Science.  We have discovered that at night the Sun is on the other side of the Earth, the Sun is a star, the Moon is a satellite and the Earth is a planet. In these pictures, we compared the size of three balls - a basket ball, a tennis ball and a medium bouncing ball.  We made the Dylan and Zander walk back until all the balls looked the same size.  This shows us that, even though the Sun and the Moon look the same size, they are not.  The Moon is much closer to Earth than the Sun.

In the photos below, students worked in groups of three to try and work out how the Earth, Sun and Moon work together.  The Moon revolves around the Earth and the Earth revolves around the Sun.

Dylan's Paper Plane Competition

Recently, Dylan held a Paper Plane Competition at lunch time for students in Room 17.  Almost all students made planes and participated.  It was a great competition with some awesome planes.  The winner, with a distance of 31 steps was Noah!

Welcome to Room 17's Blog

Hello and Welcome to our first blog post.

The students in Room 17 have made a great start to the year and are getting used to a new Teacher and different routines.  We have also welcomed two new students into the class: Latiesha and Gnanadeep.

Thank you to all those parents who were able to attend the Parent Information Evening.  It was great to see so many of you.  For those who were not able to attend I have sent the handouts home.  If you have any questions or want to pass on any information please feel free to email me - julia.calvert@education.wa.edu.au.

Today at assembly we won the Tidy Bags Award.  This is given to the class who has had the tidiest bags (stacked nicely and zipped up all the way), since the last assembly.  Well done everyone!!  This award was accepted by our two Student Councillors for Semester 1 - Elice and Zander.

Also at assembly, three students received Merit Certificates: Halle, Dylan and Gnanadeep.

Students are ready to begin Prime Maths.  We are awaiting payment for books from a few students.  If you have not paid this yet, please make your payment of $33.50 at the office as soon as possible.

Students are being introduced to the VCOP Big Write Program this year.  Already students are loving the Kung Fu Punctuation - get them to show you at home!  On Tuesday nights students will be bringing home Talk Homework.  This is to discuss the writing prompt for the following day, to give them ideas and perhaps a few WOW words.  Please take some time to discuss this with your child, perhaps over dinner.

Speaking of homework, students should be practicing their spelling words every night, as well as reading every night.  Please have your child record their reading and parents are to sign it.  On Wednesday, students will have a Word Problem Wednesday to complete and return on Thursday.  There will also be other pieces of homework along the way.

This coming Friday, students in Room 17 have been invited to participate in Dylan's Paper Plane Competition.  Student have to make their own plane out of A4 paper and bring it to school to compete at lunch time on Friday, 27 February.  There is a prize for the best plane!!

Looking forward to a great year getting to know all these lovely students and their parents.

Week 5 Talk Homework for Writing

Talk Homework is an essential part of the writing process.  Tonight, students will be bringing home the writing stimulus below.  Please take time to discuss this with them, to give them ideas and some WOW words to use in their writing tomorrow.  Dot points and words may be written and brought to school to use, however the writing process must take place in class.  Thank you for supporting your children to improve in their writing.
